Looking nervously around the corner for any trace of other inhabitants, Veri was extremely tense. As soon as the last sound of the teacher's footsteps were gone, she rushed out from her hiding place in the corner, tennis racket still in hand, and set off in a brisk jog through the now abandoned hallways. She soon began to relax as she fell into a familiar rhythm. As she reached the large double doors of the library, she paused to admire the intricate wood designs before she pushed the doors open and winced as a large squeaking sound erupted. She sighed. 'Someone really needs to oil those hinges,' she thought to herself. 'Thank god almost everyone is at the pep rally. One of these days I'll finally get caught, and god knows what my so called friends will say.'
The noise had caused the librarian to look up. The old woman smiled as she recognized Veri's familiar face. Then, as she took a more careful look at Veri, her brow furrowed behind her large glasses as she took in her tennis racket and her tennis skirt. The woman raised an eyebrow in question. Veri just shrugged in response. Sighing, the woman returned to her books, all the while shaking her head at the antics of young adolescents these days.
As the librarian looked down at her books once more, Veri rushed off to her favorite section. The Fantasy books aisle. She scanned the titles of all the books carefully before finally standing up on her tiptoes to get a book. When she finally managed to get the book, she walked off to her favorite chair and sat down, opening the book and diving into the story. An hour passed, the silence only pierced by the sounds of pages turning and small gasps coming from Veri's lips. Suddenly, she looked up. A noise had come from behind a nearby bookshelf. Someone else was here. Frantically, Veri rushed to find a place to hide her book.
